Today we're making Microsoft Teams protection generally available in Eon Data Protection for Microsoft 365. Eon now backs up Teams channel conversations and chats, and when you restore a message, it comes back under the person who wrote it, at the time they wrote it.
In many organizations, decisions live in Teams threads rather than in documents: the approval on a discount, the call on which vendor to use, the reason a deploy got rolled back. When a thread like that disappears, you need it back the way people wrote it, so it still shows who agreed to what.
Why Microsoft Teams needs a dedicated recovery layer
Teams history goes missing in a handful of ordinary ways:
- someone deletes a message, a thread or a whole conversation, by accident or on purpose
- an employee leaves, and their 1:1 and group chats go with the account
- an attacker with a compromised account deletes or edits channel history at scale
- an admin converts or reconfigures a channel in a way that drops its history
- an AI agent or scripted workflow posts or edits messages faster than anyone can review them
Microsoft designed its native tools for compliance. Retention policies and eDiscovery keep a copy of the data for legal hold and search, but they aren't designed to put a channel back the way it looked yesterday. And once a deleted message passes the end of Microsoft's retention window, you have no clean point to restore from.
How Eon protects Microsoft Teams
Eon takes point-in-time backups of Teams channel conversations and chats. Each backup captures the root message, every threaded reply under it, reactions, mentions and inline images, across standard, private and shared channels, along with 1:1, group and meeting chats.
After the first full backup, each run picks up only what changed since the last one, which keeps backup runs short even in busy channels. Files posted in a channel already live in its SharePoint site, which Eon's SharePoint backup covers, so we left them out of the Teams backup on purpose to avoid storing any file twice.
Recovery points live outside your Microsoft 365 tenant, so they stay isolated from ransomware, compromised accounts and other malicious activity inside the tenant.
What recovery looks like
Say someone in a finance channel deletes the thread where the team agreed on a vendor's final price, and nobody notices for two weeks. In Eon you pick a recovery point from before the deletion and restore that one thread with every reply under it. You can send it back into the original channel, or into a new channel if you'd rather review it first.
Each message carries its original sender and original timestamp instead of appearing as a same-day post from a backup app.
