Data Protection Cost Analysis

AWS Backup Cost Calculator

Estimate what you'll spend on AWS backup each year and see which line items drive it: warm and cold storage, lifecycle transitions, cross-region copies, API requests, and restores. The model uses AWS Backup public list pricing, and every assumption is adjustable.

How to reduce AWS backup costs

Want to go further? Eon customers see a 30–50% reduction in cloud backup costs. Schedule an intro call with our team for a more in-depth cost reduction analysis.

Move backups to cold storage sooner

Snapshots that stay in warm storage longer cost more. Adjust the cold-tier transition setting to see the impact.

Keep only the retention you need

Every daily, weekly, and monthly snapshot you retain adds to storage. Match retention to your actual compliance requirements.

Be deliberate about copies

Each extra copy, whether cross-region or an immutable vault, multiplies your storage cost.

Choose the right S3 protection mode

Replication is cheaper than AWS Backup for S3, but it isn't a true point-in-time backup. The cheapest option isn't always the safe one.

AWS backup cost calculator FAQ

How much does AWS backup cost?

It depends on how much data you protect, how long you retain it, how many copies you keep, and how fast your data changes. The calculator breaks your estimate into AWS billing dimensions so you can see which one drives your total.

What's included in AWS backup costs?

Six billable line items: warm storage, lifecycle transitions to cold storage, cold storage, cross-region transfer, API requests, and restores. The calculator also shows EventBridge events, which AWS Backup doesn't charge for.

Why are my AWS backup costs higher than expected?

Each extra copy (cross-region or immutable vault) multiplies storage, and long retention compounds it. Some resources, such as Aurora and DynamoDB in this model, store a full copy at every retention point instead of incrementals.

Is S3 replication the same as a backup?

No. Replication costs less, but it isn't a true point-in-time backup. The calculator models AWS Backup for S3, replication, versioning, and no protection separately because their cost profiles differ widely.

How is DynamoDB point-in-time recovery priced?

DynamoDB point-in-time recovery (PITR) is billed at a flat $0.20 per GB-month on the full table size in us-east-1. Long-term retention still needs snapshots on top of PITR. Rates vary by region.

How is this different from the AWS Pricing Calculator?

The AWS Pricing Calculator estimates costs service by service from inputs you configure. This tool focuses on backup: it starts from industry-based defaults and shows where backup spend concentrates across services and billing dimensions.

How accurate is the estimate?

It's based on AWS Backup public list pricing and population-level industry assumptions. It shows a likely range, not a single number, and every input can be overridden to match your environment.

Methodology

Numbers are estimates derived from AWS Backup public list pricing and population-level industry assumptions. The model is public and the data tables are versioned in the repo. Every value above is overrideable. Adjust any slider to match your environment. We don't store or send your inputs anywhere unless you choose to share results.
